Winner: Cultural project of the year. Elding Oscarson has designed and added the Wisdome to the National Swedish Museum of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
This project showcases a visualisation dome, a spherical space where visualisation technology achieves an immersive audiovisual experience, along with a café and an exhibition hall.
The building splices together museum functions around an unused courtyard; although the dome function is tall, the addition is sensitive to the historic buildings defining the courtyard.
The dome is given a focal position under a free-form timber structure to create a strong interior space and a telling exterior character.
The roof mediates between the tall dome and the low facades of the one-storey building, spanning 26 x 48 metres across the dome.
Judges comments: "This project is a stunning example of architectural innovation that harmoniously integrates with its context. By redefining expectations for planetarium design, it creates a welcoming presence at street level while maintaining an impressive interior volume. This project beautifully balances boldness and subtlety, achieving a remarkably inviting atmosphere."
