The Design: Visual Communication MA course is a practical course grounded in individual practice and research. Students are part of the art and design postgraduate community with whom they share teaching and learning.

Students become more effective specialist photographers, graphic designers or illustrators, by developing their practice alongside those in related fields. This is particularly important at a time when boundaries between these disciplines are changing – and in some cases dissolving.

We encourage students to work independently and collaboratively, developing a strong contextualised approach to visual language, whilst building strong professional and critical contexts for their practice. The increased confidence and abilities that students achieve are clearly evident in the portfolios they develop and the careers they pursue on successful completion of the course. Our alumni often move straight into work for design agencies or as freelance practitioners.
