The University of Calgary's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape offers Canada's first post-professional, design-based doctoral degree.
The Doctor of Design (DDes) is a unique three-year virtual degree for mid-career architects, planners and landscape architects who want to remain fully engaged in their professional practice while leveraging their experience and expertise into innovation with real-world impact.
The DDes enables established design professionals in architecture, planning, and landscape architecture to undertake a focused research project that builds on their professional expertise and tackles real-world practice-based challenges.
Students complete the program while remaining productive and engaged in their practice.
All work is completed remotely with a small cohort of fellow practitioner students, as well as while working closely with an assigned supervisor.
Students present their progress work at biannual dedicated design research symposia, where they receive feedback from panels of invited experts and thought leaders.
This unique approach provides students with opportunities for learning and interacting with some of the most influential minds in their field.
Through this research framework, students identify and develop innovations that make ideas project-ready for integration into their practice.
