Master of Architecture Futures at Leeds Beckett University
The Master of Architecture Futures course at Leeds Beckett University assists students in reflecting on current interdisciplinary architectural contexts while exploring the future of architecture.
School: Leeds School of Architecture, Leeds Beckett University
Course: Master of Architecture Futures
Location: Leeds, UK
Course dates: September 2023 to June 2025
Application deadline: 15 September 2023
The Master in Architecture Futures takes into account the ever more diverse and dynamic landscapes of architectural production, culture and politics.
This programme addresses the wide range of tasks and modes of operation that architectural practitioners engage in besides traditional work in the architectural office.
This includes work in materials development, consultancy, facilitation, policy-making, systems planning, event planning and curating, activist and charity work, artistic practices, community projects, journalistic and investigative work, educational work in schools, academia and adult learning, critical and academic writing and publishing.
The MA Architectural Futures course builds on the increasingly inter or transdisciplinary nature of architectural practice, not constrained by the current framework of RIBA/ARB accreditation.
The course specifically raises the question: what kind of project and research arises from architecture and its possible futures within an interdisciplinary context and sets out to define the status and methods of design research?
Future thinking processes are recognised as providing opportunities for students to more comfortably address issues outside of their sphere of knowledge in an exploratory framework.
Students define and explore a focused architectural research project in writing and in design projects through a range of media, as appropriate and negotiated with tutors.
In this course, students will develop a unique set of competencies that will enable them to ‘think outside the box’ and engage with architecture and the built environment in new, creative, innovative and socially responsible ways.
Applications to this course have now closed.
