The MRes Design programme in the School of Design teaches theoretical and applied design research.
We believe a combination of curiosity, dialogue and impact creates positive social change. The MRes Design course identifies itself as being open, challenging and curious.
You will join a vibrant cohort of researchers engaged "in action" and "of action" in critical dialogue with provocative subjects, issues, tensions and opportunities.
You will be challenged to establish research that has identifiable benefits to stakeholders, offers real-world impact, and negotiates macro trends, such as responsible design, sustainability and ethical behaviour.
At the heart of our philosophy, is research-embedded learning, purposeful play, academic excellence and the application of advanced robust methods.
Structured modules provide opportunities to learn sophisticated research design, close reading and critical writing skills and symposium organisation.
Complementary regular supervision meetings will underpin your student experience, providing formative discussions that help you to test iterative ideas, develop a tight argument and refine your research focus.
You will ultimately produce either a 20,000-word dissertation or a practical body of research plus an accompanying 10,000-word dissertation.
Alongside the academic journey, you will interact with careers advisers and the wider post-graduate community and engage with design research seminars.
MRes graduates are now in research-focused roles in industry, academic positions and running their own businesses, informed by their research.
