Designers Hot List

Oki Sato of Nendo pips Thomas Heatherwick to top our Designers Hot List

It was a close-run thing for the top spot between Oki Sato of Nendo (number one) and Thomas Heatherwick (number two). But the prolific Japanese industrial-design studio eventually pipped the almost-as-prolific Londoner, whose work has dramatically scaled up and who we may have to shift over to the Architects Hot List next year.

By nationality the UK is top dog, with seven designers in the top 20, including Tom Dixon (number four), Jasper Morrison (number five), Benjamin Hubert (number seven) and Barber & Osgerby (number eight). Apple's British design chief Jonathan Ive is surprisingly low down the list at number 11.

But perhaps the most striking thing about the Designers Hot List is how male-dominated it is: Patricia Urquiola (number 10) is the only woman in the top 20. Hella Jongerius is the next female at 21 while Ilse Crawford is at 31.
