For the second year running, Burning Man hosts a virtual festival in place of its usual real-world event.
Following the cancellation of the physical Burning Man festival due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event takes place across six different metaverses that can be attended digitally from across the world. Visitors can experience the event using a laptop, phone, browser or virtual-reality headset.
Much like the physical Burning Man festival, each venue within the metaverse has a different theme. Visitors can freely roam the spaces and customise them by adding their own digital art.
“It has never been easier to participate in Burning Man culture than today via the six community-built Worlds," said Marian Goodell, Burning Man CEO.
"By not building Black Rock City in the Nevada desert in 2021 we have an opportunity to welcome more people to the creative and engaging experience that is Burning Man. The six virtual Worlds on diverse platforms will welcome all to come and explore — without requiring anyone to travel!”
Virtual Burn 2021 event takes place online at https://kindling.burningman.org/virtualburn/ from 22 August to 7 September 2021.
