Who can enter?
The competition is free to enter, with professional designers, non-designers, students and teams invited to participate. Entries from individuals or teams of designers will be accepted.
All entrants must be over 18 and able to present their work to a panel of English-speaking judges.
Entrants will also need to be available from 26 August 2017 to 2 September 2017, as the five finalists will be invited by Samsung to electronics trade show IFA in Berlin. If contestants enter as a team, only one person will be invited to attend the judging.
Brief and judging criteria
Contestants are asked to rethink the dimension and shape of the Samsung QLED TV stand. Proposed designs can be either freestanding or table-mounted, and the use of innovative materials is encouraged.
Samsung is looking for outstanding designs, which show that a TV is no longer a technology item, but a lifestyle product. The brand would like entrants to have a particular lifestyle in mind and design their stand to match it. This could be minimal, eccentric or luxurious, for example.
Entrants should also consider the potential of Samsung's new translucent optical cable, Invisible Connection, when designing. It combines signals from multiple devices to eliminate the tangle of wires usually found behind televisions – meaning the TV could potentially be placed anywhere in a room.
Winners and prizes
There will be a total cash prize of €30,000: a top prize of €8,000 for the winning design, €3,000 for the other four finalists and €1,000 each for the 10 entrants that make it as far as the shortlist.
On top of this, contestants will have the chance to enter a separate agreement with Samsung over the rights to the design, which will otherwise remain with the designer.
