Dezeen promotion: in our latest competition, Dezeen has partnered with Fritz Hansen to give away two Series 7 chairs, which are being offered with Italian velvet upholstery for the first time.
This competition has now closed.
The Series 7 chair features a triangular backrest with curved edges, with a cinched waist and round seat, which dips at the front.
Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1955, the hourglass-shaped chair has since become one of the furniture brand's bestselling products.
The chair seat measures 50 centimetres wide and 52 centimetres deep, and it stands 80.5 centimetres high. Its design allows for up to 12 units to be stacked on top of one another.
The Italian velvet upholstery option launched earlier this year, and is available in three colours: misty rose, autumn red and grey blue.
Two readers will win a Series 7 chair in the velvet upholstery of their choice.
Sold exclusively by Fritz Hansen, the chairs are made using a technique called steam bending, that shapes nine layers of veneered timber in a mould using heat from the steam.
Customers can choose from a seat made from plain, stained or lacquered wood, leather or the new velvet upholstery.
The velvet is made from 100 per cent cotton and covers both the seat and underside of the chair. It is a durable upholstery textile that is resistant to crushing and abrasion.
Produced by Italian textile brand Redaelli Velluti, the family-run company has worked with velvet for over 100 years across the fashion, furniture and interior design industries.
By opting for velvet in deep-hued colours like autumn red and grey blue and the lighter misty rose, the brand aims to update the timeless design with upholstery never before seen on the Series 7 chair.
"Popular colours give this iconic design an update," said Christian Andresen, head of design at Fritz Hansen. "Doing so in velvet adds to its relevance."
The velvet Series 7 chair has bronze powder-coated steel legs, rather than the chrome steel legs found on other variations. The colour is designed to complement the upholstery.
The furniture brand was influenced by the fact that the material has always been considered a luxury textile, but works in a variety of contemporary settings when applied to a classic design.
According to the brand, the new Series 7 variation offers a "delicate balance between formality and simplicity, form and function, past and future".
Fritz Hansen was founded in 1872, and has been a leader in furniture design ever since. With classic designs such as the Series 7, the brand promotes a modern aesthetic driven by Nordic lifestyles and Scandinavian design.
Two winners will receive a Series 7 chair upholstered in velvet, in either misty rose, autumn red or grey blue.
