Paper Space

Immediacy Design and Research Office has designed Paper Space, a spatial art installation in Xi'an, China.

The design of Paper Space project uses paper as a carrier, and through cutting and folding, it is transformed from a two-dimensional plane into a three-dimensional space.

During the folding process, the meaning of inside and outside was repeatedly discussed.

"Outside is the standard configuration of a rental house. Doors, windows, tables, chairs, and beds constitute almost the most claustrophobic residence in the city," said Immediacy Design and Research Office.

"Inside is the tens of millions of such residences [that have] surrounded and compressed my hometown, leaving only a small reed swamp."

The work uses surreal sensory illusions and immersive spatial experiences to discuss themes such as hometown and city, land and residence, migration and belonging and guides the audience to become part of the work during the wandering process, recalling the past and re-creating it in the intersection of time and space.

This project has been shortlisted in the cultural project category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
