Jian Hotel: The Revival of Historical Textile Heritage in Huzhou

Office Canopy of Architecture has transformed the Jian Hotel in Huzhou, China.

Hailed as the "revival of historical textile heritage", the project is located in the central area of Lianshi Town in the Nanxun District of Huzhou City.

"The owner wish[ed] to transform a silk-reeling factory building complex dating back to the 1950s into an art hotel with local characteristics," said Office Canopy of Architecture.

The design aims to balance tranquillity amidst urban activity, embodying the concept of a 'hidden gem in a small town' to create an art hotel distinct from standardised accommodations, infused with local silk weaving memories.

At the architectural design level, the concept of 'pavilions and courtyards coexisting' is employed to create a vibrant relationship between movement and stillness, architecture and nature, ceremonial and exploratory aspects.

Addressing the project's constraints involved ensuring a reasonable ratio of public areas to guest rooms, adequate natural lighting for guest rooms, balancing views with privacy, creating barrier-free circulation paths that are sheltered from rain and ensuring accessibility.

This project has been shortlisted in the hospitality project category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
