Hi Cozy Youth Hostel Design

Unspoken Space has designed the interiors for the Hi Cozy Youth Hostel in Shanghai, China.

This project presents a significant challenge in terms of scale, psychology, and physical design, which aims to align with the space's unique characteristics, creating pathways that "evoke a sense of 'discovery', allowing users to explore and find their own home within," said Unspokén Space.

The original terrace and inherent form of the space naturally guided the design towards a layout that encourages both gathering and dispersal.

"Many young people and backpackers in cities are in search of a temporary refuge, driven by free-spirited yet fiercely independent souls," added Unspokén Space. "This space aspires to offer them a possible haven."

The areas defined by the lighting design guide users to the hub of the space – the reception area –where one can easily observe the distribution of private and communal zones.

Upon entering, everyone can see the central cylindrical mirror installation reflecting a moon on the ceiling, softly and equally illuminating each person. This creates not only an experiential atmosphere but also a vision of inclusivity.

This project has been shortlisted in the hotel and short-stay interior category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
