Peiping Machine in Longhui Winery

Draw has designed the interiors for Peiping Machine in Longhui Winery, a restaurant and bar created as part of a factory renovation project in Beijing, China.

The project is located in Haidian, Beijing, on the former site of the Longhui Winery. Founded in 1910, the winery was the first winery in China and was relocated to its current site shortly after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

In response to relieve Beijing of functions that were non-essential to its role as China's capital, the wine production department was relocated in 2018, starting a phase of the new urban renewal of the area.

As part of the renovation of the industrial land and to meet current needs, the craft beer industry was introduced. Peiping Machine, in collaboration with Draw, selected one of the brick-concrete structures originally built with Soviet aid back in the 1960s, continuing the historical industrial context while injecting new vitality into a space that had been dormant.

Peiping Machine aims to continue the industrial legacy of the former winery by introducing new businesses and revitalising the space. The building had suffered from years of neglect, with the iconic retro white and green walls extensively mouldy and peeling.

"While we were contemplating whether to restore them, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the red bricks had retain[ed] a dense texture, uniform colour, and a quality that far surpasses modern bricks—making it a material difficult to replicate," said Draw.

"Therefore, preserving as much of the existing brickwork as possible and minimising the need for new bricks became a primary consideration in material usage."

This project has been shortlisted in the restaurant and bar interior category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
