Somekh Building Renovation
Shisuo Design has renovated the Somekh Building in Shanghai, China.
The Somekh Building was built between 1918 and 1921 and is located in the historical and cultural area of the Bund.
It has typical eclectic architectural features and was one of the important works of the then-famous Atkinson & Dallas in modern Shanghai.
"It was entrusted by the owner to repair and transform part of the space in the Sha Mei (Somekh) Building," said Shisuo Design. "The renovation scope covers the building entrance and exhibition hall on the first floor, the multi-functional hall on the second floor, the double-height atrium and ancillary spaces on the third floor."
"Unlike other conversion projects, the renovation of a historic building is not just about restoring and presenting the true face of history, but also requires careful and precise intervention to create new spaces that both follow historical clues and meet current functional needs."
This project has been shortlisted in the heritage project category of Dezeen Awards China 2023.
