Canter and Gallop Design has designed the interiors for A Bamboo Sanctuary in Hong Kong.

Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, this residence has been re-imagined as a serene sanctuary amidst bamboo trees. Inspired by Kyoto’s peaceful bamboo forests, the family of four sought a retreat that embodies mindfulness and simplicity.

The design blends earthy materials, subtle textures, and thoughtful elements to reflect their love for nature and spiritual sensibilities. Upon entering, a floor-to-ceiling shoe cabinet clad entirely in hand-glazed green ceramic tiles reminiscent of bamboo leaves welcomes guests.

The tiles transition into the heart of the cabin, inset into the wooden vertical struts along the display cabinetry. Mimicking the arch of bamboo canes, the curved wooden roof fosters a sense of enclosure and protection.

A raised timber platform nestled in the display cabinets bridges the communal and private spaces. Understated architectural elements, such as wooden wall linings and rounded mouldings, are paired with bouclé fabric and velvet upholstery to simulate a refined, cabin-like experience – while ambient cove lighting washes over the vaulted ceilings, creating alcoves for quiet contemplation.

The result is a tactile haven that whispers tranquillity, inviting its inhabitants to slow down and cultivate a deeper connection with their inner selves and nature.

This project has been shortlisted in the home interior category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
