Chaos is a Ladder
DL Atelier has developed and completed Chaos is a Ladder, a hospitality project in Huairou, Beijing, China.
In 2020, DJ Atelier designed a rural hotel for Xiaoxi B&B near the Great Wall of China; the site is considered unique, with the Great Wall and the Ming Dynasty close at hand. As a result, its strong characteristics have become an attraction.
"We chose to create a little danger provocation in the buildings, creating a 'seemed to be connected but actually separated at the project site' footbridge that stands above the existing buildings, to imitate the relationship between the fortification, the Great Wall and the antennas," said DL Atelier.
"The client asked for simplicity and to highlight the characters of [the] yard as much as possible while preserving the existing buildings."
The finished result showcases how the architects endeavoured to maintain the original structure to the greatest extent possible.
This project has been shortlisted in the hospitality project category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
