Deformation Under Pressure

Studio Ololoo has designed Deformation Under Pressure, a series of adjustable inflatable lamps made from TPU.

Inspired by the phenomenon of soft materials deforming after being pressed, this project explored tension and deformation and blended them with the function of the product.

The lamps are made of recyclable TPU, and the inflated body of the lamp is clamped with aluminium rings to form articulations.

The structure stretched by thin wires can be held by friction at any position, so the height and direction of the lamp can be adjusted freely just by pulling the lamp manually without using any conventional mechanical structure.

"It’s an experimental project which explored the phenomenon [of] tension and deform and blends them with the function of the product," said Studio Ololoo.

"With lamp as [a ]medium, it discussed the possibilities of inflated product in terms of material, structure and form."

This project has been shortlisted in the lighting design category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
