Line+ Studio has designed Twelve Tents Beyond Clouds, a public activity centre in Xinchang, China.

The Twelve Tents Beyond Clouds project is located in the Xiayanbei Village, atop a ridge over 300 metres above sea level in eastern Zhejiang, serving both scenic area tourists and the daily needs of villagers.

The design combines commercial retail with public activities, organised through modular layouts. By inserting variously scaled flat panels at different elevations, it creates sheltered grey spaces, forming a free-flowing, three-dimensional open system that accommodates diverse scenarios for village activities and rural tourism.

The non-standardised units feature steel structures covered with semi-transparent PTFE materials, and the roofs use nature-friendly pine wood. This combination creates a sculptural local landmark for community life.

"With the growing demand for rural tourism, the local government has planned to comprehensively enhance the scenic area's supporting facilities and develop diverse business formats," said Line+ Studio.

"The project site was previously a tea processing factory. After the factory was relocated, the land was requisitioned by the government for public facilities and a community centre."

This project has been shortlisted in the mixed-use project category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
