Zhejiang Lishui Guyanhuaxiang Art Center

Line+ Studio has designed the Zhejiang Lishui Guyanhuaxiang Art Center in Lishui, China.

The Guyanhuaxiang Art Center is a public art centre in Lishui, Zhejiang, a distinctive town integrating art galleries, art education, cultural tourism and residential life.

The local government plans to construct an art centre in the town's core to meet the needs of residents, tourists, and artists while also serving as a platform for art exhibitions and public education.

The design merges the institutional nature of the art centre with the everyday life of the town by juxtaposing these elements.

Strategies such as an enclosed central area with open lower floors, multiple scales, and mixed-use functionalities seek to balance the modern art landmark with the natural, lively atmosphere.

The upper part of the building, with its grand scale beyond everyday experience, houses the art exhibition functions. The lower part, designed at a more familiar neighbourhood scale, consists of small box-like spaces that accommodate retail and leisure functions.

Internally, a large and a small courtyard opens up to the surroundings, serving as public spaces for the town's daily activities.

This project has been shortlisted in the cultural project category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
